Ann and Alison get a hula lesson

We drove to Oahu's north shore to visit the Waimea Valley Audubon Center.  The Center is a beautiful combination of bird sanctuary, botanical garden, and museum of recreated and actual artifacts of ancient indigenous Hawaiians.  Here Ann and Alison join in on a hula lesson at the Center.

Ann and Alison at the Waimea falls

At the end of the center property is Waimea Falls.  Ann and Alison contemplate the falls and the pool below.  It was so warm and humid that Ann decided to go swimming in the pool even though she didn't bring her bathing suit.  It turned out not to matter; we were all pleasantly soaked by a rainstorm on the hike back from the falls.

Laurel and Ann give Alison a snorkeling lesson

Along the coast at Waimea is Shark's Cove ... a favorite snorkeling and diving spot, where we saw colorful tropical fish and other sea creatures.  No sharks, however.  Alison gets a snorkeling lesson from Laurel and Ann.  Both Alison and I are horribly nearsighted.  We are saved by the existence of underwater eyewear ground to roughly match one's prescription glasses.  So we can see the little fishies as more than just vague blurs.

real gecko

We end this with an actual gecko in Ann's mom's backyard.  Bon appétit, gecko!
